These defintions specify the biological classification in our Furry Star Trek universe.  Biological rules apply unless we make an exception, usually this will only be done to preserve the important canon features of a species (JemHadar break so many biological rules it's painful).  One consequence of this is that Hybrids are restricted and require pre-approval of concept(And they will be balanced).   That is, foxes and wolves can't naturally interbreed in the real universe, so Anthro foxes and wolves can't naturally breed true in this universe either.  But with genetic assistance hybrids are possible.  Like Mr. Spock for example, as Terrans and Vulcans also can't interbreed naturally and freely.

Animal-  Any species of organism that belongs in the Animal Kingdom, or fictional organism that would be biologically classified under Klingom Animalia if it existed.   Animals are defined by thier necessity to consume life for thier own survival and the ability to move under their own power
Person or Sapien or Sophont -- Intelligent, language-using biological organism.
Furry --  An anthropomorphic animal, an animal who has qualities of a person such as the ability to think in abstract concepts.  All Furries are sapiens.
Feral-  A non-morphic non-language using animal.
Alien- The quality of originating from outside the local regional boundaries.  For purposes of this article the boundary is Earth's atmosphere.  Although if you ask an alien who is an alien you'll get a much different answer. KlingonGrin

For Hunam Crossover RPs (In the unlikely case we should have one)
Hunam -  Homo Sapien Sapeins.  You know 'em.  You love em.  What would we do without them.  Well, a lot, but some people seem to insist...  They have the 8 Anthro traits and no animal or alien traits
Hunamoid Aliens-  They sorts of aliens you see in canon, although a few canon aliens fully qualify as Furries. They contain fewer than one alien/animal trait per two anthro traits.  Generally without the full body fur typical of Furry Aliens.

This info is provided to help in the design of custom alien species and does not necessarily apply to individuals.

Anthro Traits:  In the real world these are the unique hyoomin traits that makes people unique from the other animals (as we understand them).  In the Fur Trek Universe, these traits are common among many sapiens, and in fact the top one or two are often used as the definition of what it means to be a person/sapien/sophont instead of a feral animal.

Animal Traits: These are traits that are specific to the species of animal you have selected for your species.  Traits found in other animals, but not found in your species (i.e. wings on a wolf) are instead counted as alien traits.

Alien Traits: These traits are either traits not found in any species of Terran animal (e.g. having six limbs as 'taurs do) or not found in your species.

Terran Furry:  Any of the countless Furry species originating on Earth.  Any actually confirmed existing non-extinct Terran animal species can be used.  Because the hyoomin race is so very diverse a particular individual may have any balance of Anthro and Animal Traits may be selected as long as you have at least one Animal Trait for every two Anthro Traits.   This is a Furry universe so you have to have enough animal traits to be clearly a Furry and not just a hyoomin with animal ears.

No Alien Traits may be selected without approval.  Sometimes mutations happen and they are seldom advantageous.

Genetically Engineered Species:   Genetic Engineering is heavily regulated in the Federation and specifically outlawed for Terrans(with a few exceptions for medical conditions).

Gene Engineered Terrans follow the same rules as other Terrans however they may have one or more Alien traits.   Complications often arise, and you might not get what you were hoping for.  And if you do, you'll have a secret to protect, because if and when Terrans find out you are Gene-tweaked, most are not likely to take kindly to you, especially those who were raised on Terra.      Gene-tweaked aliens may or may not have similar cultural biases for and against genetic alterations.

However, there is at least one (probably a few) colonies at the edges of the Federation founded by Terrans(and others) who found this taboo stupid and repressive.  These colonists call themselves 'vares', short for "variants".  They tend to be very flamboyant in their defiance and quite avid and creative in body modification for consenting adults. specializing in unusual (often gaudy) colorations and species hybridizations.  Vares tend to form close knit communities, united by their love of freedom, egalitarianism and pride.   They won't help someone who does not share their community spirit and pride.  And are especially hostile to anyone seeking enhancements to elevate themselves above anyone else or who do not embrace the independence based counter culture.  This tends to make them unpopular with Star Fleet and vice versa, but there may have(depending the ship's timeline) been vares who have served notably in Starfleet.

Furry Alien-  An anthropomorphic Alien species.  Furry alien species are intelligent anthropomorphic animals that civilized themselves on a planet other than Earth.  An alien Furry species must have at least as many Animal + Alien Traits as Anthro Traits.  You still must have one Animal Trait for every two Anthro Traits.

Scientists, Philosophers and Theologists of many many species have wondered for millenia why intelligent life appears to be far more abundant than one would expect it to be, and why they are all so vary similar in anatomy.   Several discoveries were being made in the late 23rd and 24th Centuries that bolster a long held theory that there was an ancient species often referred to as "The Preservers" that took promising intelligent life from their Homeworld and seeded them on other worlds to improve their chances for success.   This is far from proven.  Finding the ultimate answer strains the lines between Science, Religion and Philosophy.   If the "Preserver" theory is correct, it would explain a great many things, but raises other questions... Why so much diversity on Earth?  Why do some worlds have several species and some only one, and still there are countless habitable worlds that don't have any...

True Alien-  Unlike most Furry aliens, your species most likely did evolve entirely on the planet they found themselves on when they became aware of that planet.  True aliens are not limted to bipedal, quadrupedal or taur bodies.  They may have radically different chemistries or diets...  And they are almost certainly not genetically compatible with anything else.   Congratulations, you are truly alien.

You need to have more Alien traits than Anthro traits, but since you probably don't have a single easily recognizable animal species, Animal Traits count toward your Alien traits.

Non exhaustive lists of traits are listed below.  If you want a trait that you don't feel fits in one of the other traits, feel free to use it anyway.  We'll review it with you and see if it fits an existing trait or if it is appropriate to add to one of the lists.

Here are the lists.  They are generally arranged with the most essential traits at the top.  These lists are not exhaustive, or completely finalized.

If you feel you don't deserve a full trait point for something (for example, your eyes have color vision, but you have a field of vision appropriate to your animal species), you can take just a half point.  I'll try to get more information up as to when this might be appropriate for each trait, but mostly it will be up to your own judgment.

We are the final arbiters though, but in general we just want you to think about your animal species and incorporate it more deeply into your character.

Also these traits apply to your species as a whole.   Personal traits acquired after birth(from missing limbs to application of fur dye) are not relevant to this, as well as gender specific differences.   (eg.  If you have two sexes, and the females have mammaries, even if your character is a male the 'Pronounced Breasts' trait applies.

Anthro Traits
-------------------------------------------------------
Abstract thinking/Language use
Modern mainstreamed Hyoomin culture/civilization
Opposable thumbs/Dexterous fingers
Bipedal/Erect posture
Advanced Warp-age Technology
Hyoomin Eyes (full color vision, straight ahead, foeva)
Omnivorous diet
Hair/longer head fur (manes and ruffs appropriate for your species don't count)
Pronounced Breasts even when not nursing (1/2 an Anthro trait unless your base species is not a mammal.)

Animal Traits (as appropriate for your selected species)
----------------------------------------------------------
Fur/feathers/scales/etc  (natural coloration)
Animal shaped ears
Tail
Animal mouth/dentition(Muzzle/beak/maw) (implies appropriate dietary preferences/restrictions)
Defenses (Claws, horns, frills, etc)
Digitgrade/ungulategrade hindpaws
Wings (only on bats, avians, dragons, etc).
Animal shape/size (4' foxes, 8' bulls, etc)
Animal senses(or other animal senses like bat radar)
Instincts/animal behaviours specific to your species
Quadrupedal posture  (If you can easily walk on two or four, both count)
Animal reproductive system (Anatomy, birth rate, gestation time, etc)
Animal life cycles (Life span, Day/night cycles, seasonal cycles, etc)
Other...

Alien Features  (Vary from 1/2 on up, depending how alien they are)
----------------------------------------------------------
Alien shapes (including Taur)
Alien Colouration (Maybe only 1/2 point)
Alien Civilisation
Alien Anatomy
Alien Size
Alien Senses
Alien reproductive systems
Alien Enviromental requirements/tolerances
Genetic Engineering
Alien Dietary requirements/preferences
Alien Life cycles (lifecycles, seasonal, etc.)
Other...

The first four Animal traits are strongly reccomended, by the way. If your 'root' species has them, then there's a very strong chance we're going to be rather... requesting on them. No catgirls and such.

Because the hyoomin race is so very diverse a particular individual may have any balance of Anthroid and Animal Traits may be selected as long as you have at least one Animal Trait for every two Anthroid Traits
  (Emphasis added)

You are more than good.  These rules are to make sure people are sufficiently true to their animal sides and not just hyoomins with animal ears. The assumption is that we all know about hyoomins, we want people to get to know thier animal and alien side, since each person is a defferent animal, the close you are to your animal side the more interesting and distinct you will be from other characters.

You have 5 or maybe 5 1/2 Anthro traits (It applies to species so Breasts are applicable)

So for every 2 Anthro traits you need one animal trait, so that is 2 1/2 or 3 animal triats...  You have seven or eight.  So you are more than animal enough.

For Terran Furries, it's really hard to run afoul of these rules, there are only 8 Anthro traits, if you have all of them, and you take the 4 highly recommended Animal traits, you cleared the hurdle.  But feel free to have as many Animal traits as you like.  We encourage it actually, and aliens should have as many alien traits as they like.  Animal and Alien traits, as well as any Anthro traits you lack can add a depth to a character.

I hope this helps clarify the point of this exercise.

As an example, Whitefangs ( a rather feral species of wolves in the Klingon empire) are a rather extreme example having 5 Anthro traits, 9 Animal traits and 6 Alien Traits.  They easily leap over the minimums for Furry Aliens, with only five Anthro traits they technically only need 2 1/2 Animal traits (though 4 is still recommended) and 5 total between Animal and Alien.

would look like this.

Anthro Traits                                     3 Yes + 1/2 * ( 4 Sorta ) = 5 traits
-------------------------------------------------------
Abstract thinking/Language use                             Yes
Modern mainstreamed Hyoomin culture/civilization     Sorta
Opposable thumbs/Dexterous fingers                       Yes, though not as dexterous
Bipedal/Erect posture                                           Sorta  ( Part time biped/Quadruped, equally awkward on both)
Advanced Warp-age Technology                            Yes (As part of the Klingon Empire they have access to modern tech)
Hyoomin Eyes (full color vision, straight ahead, foeva)  Sorta (Can't see red, reduced visual acuity, visual streak )
Omnivorous diet                                                  No
Hair/longer head fur                                             No
Pronounced Breasts even when not nursing              Sorta ( multiple pairs, but pronounced only when nursing,
except top pair which remains after first nursing)

Animal Traits (as appropriate for your selected species)     8 Yes + 2 Sortas = 9 Animal Traits
----------------------------------------------------------
Fur/feathers/scales/etc                                        Yes  (Covered in full body fur)
Animal shaped ears                                              Yes
Tail                                                                   Yes
Animal mouth/dentition(Muzzle/beak/maw)               Yes, Normal canine teeth
Defenses (Claws, horns, frills, etc)                          Yes, non-retractable wolf claws, tend to be sharpened
Digitgrade/ungulategrade hindpaws                         Yes, digitgrade with oversized hindpaws for stability
Wings (only on bats, avians, dragons, etc).              N/A
Animal shape/size (4' foxes, 8' bulls, etc)                  N/A    Wolves are moderate sized so would be in the 5-6 foot range
Animal senses(or other animal senses like bat radar)   Yes   (Wolf hearing, diminished eyesight, though better than wolves)
Instincts/animal behaviours specific to your species   Yes  ( Instincts take over when they are tired, hungry, threatened, etc)
Quadrupedal posture                                            Sorta  ( Part time biped/Quadruped, equally awkward on both)
Animal reproductive system                                   Sorta  (canine sex organs, 5.5 month Gestation (averaged wolf + hyoomin)
Animal life cycles                                                 Hmmm  ( Shedding and Heat cycles under consideration )

Alien Features  (Vary from 1/2 on up, depending how alien they are)   6 traits
----------------------------------------------------------
Alien shapes (including Taur)                                 No
Alien Colouration (Maybe only 1/2 point)                  Yes
Alien Civilisation                                                  Yes  ( Whitefangs fit well in Klingon Culture, rarely deviating)
Alien Anatomy                                                    Yes  ( Specialized digestive system to accomodate deit, 'liver' 'flips over' in response to stress)
Alien Size                                                           No
Alien Senses                                                       Yes  ( Ultra-violet vision, insensitive to red)
Alien reproductive systems                                    No
Alien Enviromental requirements/tolerances               Sorta  ( Perfer slightly warmer and weter environments )
Genetic Engineering                                             Not really   (Though it could be argued that there was a 600-800 year artificial breeding program)
Alien Dietary requirements/preferences                    Yes    ( Neurochemistry requires higher levels of Arsenic )
Alien Life cycles (lifecycles, seasonal, etc.)              Yes    ( lifespan ~60 years -- Shedding and Heat cycles under consideration )

Updated to include life cycle traits in animal and alien.   Added a few more clarifications.  Sorry if I wasn't very clear about how this applied, hopefully this is better.   In general most people won't have to worry about this unless they are making their own species.

    Any comments or questions?

Well, I wanted to get this up sooner.  Hopefully I'll find a way to automate the conversion so it wont take so long.  There are still some missing races and some here have missing info.  I'm still working on it, but any feedback especially constructively negative is appreciated.

Note:  This list is not exhaustive.  It's meant to fill in the universe a bit and spark ideas for your own races.
If you have an idea for another species for a canon race (Vulcan owls or elephants or something), as long as it's generally appropriate I'm all for it.  Betazed Dinosaurs, on the other paw, would be more difficult to talk me into, but if your argument is good enough, give it a try.   I try to be reasonable and work with people to draw connections between the trek races and animal species.

Maybe I subit them as a thread here with all facts that is explaind in stories rather than on the intro page (not all ppl wanna read 1000+ A4 pages to get them fully)?
